Good morning on day one of the Camino Portugues. A twelve-day pilgrimage from Porto to Santiago on the Coastal route.
I woke up this morning at 5:30 am and was out the door by seven. A quick breakfast and I was following the Douro river down to its inevitable crash with the Atlantic Ocean. A spectacle in full display at the Felgueiras Lighthouse.
Matosinhos beach is the first of many to come along the trip. Modern, massive and with a historic fort. The sea was angry just how the surfers like it.
It was 11:23 am and a cool 15c, and after a quick break at a local garden, I crossed the Ponte movil to the quite beachfront neighborhood of Leça da Palmeira. A mere 4km away, you can find the famous 1926 Lighthouse of Boa Nova. At 46 meters tall it’s one of Portugal’s tallest.
I had lunch at a grassy field with the unexpected company of two pilgrims I will come to see a few more times along the way. The panoramic views from the stone marker at Boa Nova chapel were breathtaking, or was it the oil refinery in the distance?
The wooden walkway was a surprising addition to an almost perfect day. A snack with a great view and a couple of charming fishing villages here and there and I was at the albergue in Labruge around 5 pm.
The one-kilometer walk down to the beach to witness my first sunset on the Camino Portugal was worth enduring the cold and the unpredictable strong gusts of wind.
But then it was time to enjoy a delicious meal at a pizza restaurant. What a better way to end a perfect day on the Camino?
